The BEST Self Improvement Books That Actually Work!
If you love growth hacking, reading and discovering new ways to improve yourself then this list of the best self improvement books if for you!
Hi there, my name is Stijn (pronounced like Stan) and today I want to share some really good reads that have helped me overcome a lot of things in life.
You could say I owe a lot to the authors of these books because they have improved the way I think, how I do my day to day tasks and given me the tools to take control of my life.
It doesn’t matter if you’re already a successful business man or a master at what you do best, we all have room for improvement and the books I’m about to recommend can help in all areas of life.
And, if you’re new to reading self improvement books these are a perfect start…
Ready To Take Control Of Your Life? Here’s 8 of The Best Self Development Books Of All Time!
Before I get into the 8 self help books that helped me, let me ask you this…
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?
I bet you start your day with a cup of coffee – perhaps along with today’s newspaper to catch up on local news.
While staying on top of your community’s news, or even the latest news in your country, is a good thing, let’s face it – this is unproductive!
How do I start MY day?
Well, somewhat similar, but instead of catching up on the latest news and gossip, I take some time to read a couple of pages in my favorite self-help book.
I now have a few favorites, actually.
For many people, the idea of reading self-help books seems useless.
You are the artist behind your own life, after all.
That was my attitude too until I was urged to pick up a book with quite an awkward name: “Unfu*k Yourself.”
I was skeptical, but when I started reading this book, I just couldn’t stop.
The point that I am trying to make is that self-help books really helps.
They may seem irrelevant to those who have not yet turned to one of these books, but trust me, once you start reading a couple of pages every morning, you begin to go through your days more motivated.
You start to believe in yourself, and you are ready to push your own limitations and, instead of just improving, you really expand your entire being.
These books are great for improving both on your personal life, as well as your professional life. If you are not sure where to start, don’t worry.
I’ve read a countless number of self-help books, and I’ll be sharing my top picks with you below…
#1. Unfu*k Yourself: Get Out of Your Head and into Your Life
I’ll have to start my list with the first self-help book I picked up – for less than $2 I might add.
The idea of this book is simple – to give you a new view on your own life and to help you feel less miserable in life. This is a genuinely no-nonsense book.
No fluff and no walking around the bushes.
All the information that you read in this book is straightforward and to the point.
The book focuses on you – the side of you that are placing limitations on what you can reach in life.
We often impose restrictions on ourselves, and this is the biggest challenge that millions (I can go on to maybe even say billions) of people are facing.
The book tells you why you are facing these challenges and, of course, what you need to do to overcome that “fu*ked upside of life.”
#2. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change
Another great one to pick up if you’re looking for a self-help book.
Instead of sharing with you the strategies that may help you overcome your self-imposed limitations, this book takes another angle – it shares with you seven particular habits that are often seen among people who are the most successful in life.
Many of these habits may seem somewhat obvious, but in reality, we often miss them – we see presidents, CEOs, and many other successful people exhibit these habits, yet often fail to notice how they help them reach success.
The book is written by Dr. Stephen Covey and has already received over 5,000 reviews (a 4.5/5.0 average rating).
#3. The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself
So many people think they know themselves until they start to dig a little deeper, discovering that there are more to themselves than they thought.
This is the perfect book for anyone who is looking to find themselves and to get to know themselves at a deeper level.
The book guides you through a journey that will help you discover more about yourself – your soul and who you are at a much deeper level than you have ever done before.
This book was written by Michael A. Singe and has helped a lot of people, including myself.
#4. Get Out of Your Own Way: Overcoming Self-Defeating Behavior
Okay, so this is quite an old book but had some interesting reviews, so I decided to give it a try. No Kindle version available, so I had to order the paperback – but it was well worth it.
This is really the complete guide to self-help and self-transformation – it offers so much more than many of the other books on the topic of self-help that I have read by now.
The book essentially focuses on 40 particular behavioral traits that are considered “self-defeating,” such as self-pity, guilt, obsession, and more.
#5. The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom
Another great pick for any person looking for a self-help book with valuable content.
The book was written by Don Miguel Ruiz and has an impressive number of positive reviews from past readers.
I also found this book to be interesting, providing a lot of details on why and how we limit ourselves on a daily basis.
In essence, this book tells the reader how they are robbing themselves of both success and joy in life, and then tells the reader how they can stop limiting themselves and start adopting behavior that will be beneficial for them.
#6. Fail Until You Don’t: Fight Grind Repeat: 2
A New York Times bestseller from Bobby Bones.
This book is a must – especially for those who quickly give up after failing, which is something a lot of people do.
You try something new in life, and the moment you fail, you decide that it’s not for you and you end up giving up on your dreams.
This book tells the reader why it is important to fail – it gives you an opportunity to learn from your own mistakes.
Additionally, it provides the reader with inspiration to help them avoid being brought down by failures in life, but rather to get back up on their feet and give it another shot.
#7. Getting Past Your Past: Take Control of Your Life with Self-Help Techniques from EMDR Therapy
This book is from the author Francine Shapiro, who developed a psychotherapy technique that has helped millions of people overcome psychological obstacles in their life.
The book primarily focuses on people who are being held back by their past and experiences they have had. Perhaps you built up a business, and it failed.
There are many past experiences that can lead to problems in the present and future, causing you to be too afraid to take a step, believing that you will just fail once again.
The book offers the reader scientifically-developed techniques to help them overcome these obstacles.
#8. The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are
This one is a little different from the rest.
I wasn’t too keen on it, but I am really glad that I gave it a go.
The book takes a completely different stance on self-help. Many of the books out there offer the reader techniques they can use to become the person they want to be – that person that they think they’re supposed to be.
This book, instead, gives the user reasons why there is no need to change.
The author, Brené Brown explains why it is important for the reader to accept themselves – just the way they are, flaws and all, and how they can use this to their own advantage.
Take this as a challenge – pick one of the self-help books I have shared with you in here. Instead of grabbing that newspaper, rather load up the book and read a few pages.
Dig deeper into the book every day.
Within a few days, you’ll start to feel more motivated. You’ll begin to experience the benefits of reading these books.
Even if you feel like you know all there is to know about yourself, these books can often help you view your life from a different perspective, helping you see exactly what needs to be changed to help you reach that level of success – both as a person and as a professional.
